Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Grateful Dead--1984

1984...it was the year of Reaganomics, George Orwell and Jump! and yet, our boyz were still doing their thing, for better and for worse. We all know about Garcia's health timeline, but in '84 he might have looked his worst (summer '86, '95). His voice started to really go and would waffle from fozzee the bear pudding throat to decent. At this point, there is a noticeable shift in sound production by Dan Healy, one that would carry over to 1985. Garcia's tone is fatter ala '85, than the more compressed ("crisp/ metallic") tone of 1983. Weir began really using more effects, particularly phase shifters, ring modulators, flangers, envelope wah pedals, than he had in years prior. Lesh's bass sound is getting thicker as well and the drummers have incorporated more coiling, rolling, quad effects during drums. Brent also establishes that caliope key/ organ sound that he uses on damn near every song...and he begins to master the bassett hound singing style that we all came to love ("tolerate") in the mid to late 80s.

All this being said, the Grateful Dead still put forth a few rocking shows in 1984. it's still the Dead and when they're on they're "on", no matter what year...right, kids?

Yes...love 6/24, especially that Bertha or just about any 2nd set Bertha for that matter

10/8 and 10/9 were also smokin'. '84 is such an underrated year. And how could we not mention the Alpine shows?

Another one that slides under the radar is 4/14/84. One of my favorite Stranger's and fantastic Let it Grow.

I think part of the problem people have with '84 is that so many of the boards from this year are so muddy sounding....especially compared to '85.

I've always been partial to '84 because that was the year I got on the bus. (4/21 Philly Civic Center). A couple of my favorites have already been mentioned. 4/21(obvious choice, 1st show), 6/24,6/27,10/12,10/18 and 10/20.

1984 came up light in my best of Brent era project.

10-20-84 Carrier Dome has the best Jack Straw ever, and 6-14-84 Red Rocks got a bunch of songs ...
